Text and Subtext
Today in media we had Dr. Leech as guest speaker, Mrs Maxwell-Steele's brother in law. He was a well educated, interesting speaker. He talked to us about commercials and other forms of advertising. He then went on to discus the text and subtext of commercials. He showed us various commercials and had us identify the main text and the subtext of each commercial. He taught us that there is a hidden message behind every commercial and that some of which are immoral and false whereas others may be true.
Another thing Dr. Leech showed us was that everything in a commercial, from clothes to setting was very thought out. He used the Bud Light commercial as an example of this. He discussed every detail of the commercial and had us think about why each detail was used.
Towards the end of the period we talked about body image and stereotypes used in advertising. We re-watched the maybelline commercial which contained the "Ideal Woman" who was pushing a face cream that covers up pores, we discussed how this commercial attacked women's self esteem by making them believe they had to be poreless and like the girl in the commercial. We also revisited the Pepto Bismol commercial that portrayed men as fat lazy slobs who will eat anything and women as perfect housewives who do nothing but care for their husbands.
I found Dr. Leech a very interesting speaker who helped me realize more about the world around me.

My Personal Intelligence
Today In class I took two tests to discover my learning style. After comparing these two tests I found that I am a musical learner, which means I think rhythmically and can easily memorize songs. I am also a very strong visual learner which means I can learn by watching something happen. My third strongest learning style was mathematical/logical. My weakest learning style was intrapersonal, I think this is accurate because I lack modivation when working alone.

A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER
Personally, I think our movie turned out to be one of the best student movies I've seen. I believe that almost everybody worked hard and it was worth it.
We did have some issues when making the movie and the major one was time. By the time everybody got into costume and organized we has wasted half the class but we eventually got all our filming done. Like any group we had some minor disagreements but we worked it all out.

My Favourite Electronic Device
At the risk of sounding like every other person my age, I would have to say my favourite electric device is my Ipod. It is a black 80 gig classic with all my music and some of my favourite videos.
The reason it is my favourite electronic device is because it makes the most boring and dull moments of my life bearable. As a skier I often go on car rides that are well over 2 hours long which can be quite treacherous without my Ipod. Whenever I'm having a bad day I can pump some classic rock into my ears and just escape the world outside.

I love my Ipod so much that when I bought it I also bought a super strong intense metal case for it which was the best five bucks I've ever spent If it weren't for that case my Ipod would be broken into a million pieces. It's not that I don't take good care of it, it has just been put through some real close calls. Once I left it at my friends house and his mother, being the nice person she is, put it in his bag to bring to me at school but she forgot to tell him it was in his bag. The next day I was walking home with him and he jumped of a curb and my Ipod shot out of his back 15 feet in the air and came crashing down on the road, if I hadn't had that case it would have broken all over the road.

O Brother, What a Good Movie!
1.) My favourite scene in the movie is when the three characters come across the sirens. I enjoyed this scene for many reasons, I liked the song they were singing, it was stuck in my head for days!!! I also found the scenery and the colours to be very beautiful.
2.) O Brother Where Art Thou starring George Clooney as Everett, Tim Blake Nelson as Delmar, and John Turturro as Pete.
3.) The cinematographer for the film was Roger Deakins, said that they wanted to alter the colours, with the intensity of colors dictated by the scene and natural skin tones that were all shades of the rainbow." I feel that this was sucessfully accomplished and the alterations gave the film an aged look. The lack of bright colours helped create an atmosphere of the depression of the 1930's.
4.) The Wizard of Oz
The Ten Commandments
The Blues Brothers
The Graduate
The Odessy
5.) I have not seen very many of the Coen brother's movie but after watching O brother, I am very interested in seeing more of their work
6.) I loved all the music in the movie, I have even added two of the songs to my Ipod. My favourite songs from the movie are "I am a man of constant sorrow" and "Go to Sleep little baby". I think that this music was chosen because it was really good music that was appropriate to the era. The music was also very interesting and catchy.

March Break
On Saturday and Sunday I had to do all my homework for the break because we left for Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Monday. When we first arrived in Florida we rented a Pontiac G6, but due to some complications we were upgraded to a Sebring convertible which was perfect in the great weather. We drove to the timeshare we were staying at which is right on the beach, we checked in, and because we were all very hungry we went out for dinner around 5:00p.m. We went to an amazing rib place and the ribs just melted in my mouth, it was incredible. When we got back to our place we relaxed and went to sleep.
On the second day I woke up and my parents and I went for a walk on the beach, when we got back we relaxed in the sun on our patio when from around the corner a huge iguana stuck its head out, it proceeded to walk towards the hot tub. I hustled and grabbed the camera and took some great pictures. The iguana was at least 5 feet long. Then another huge iguana came walking by and I got some pictures of it as well. For dinner we went to a mediocre restaurant and we ate out by the beach, the view was great.

On Wednesday it rained all day which was a huge bummer but we ended up going to the festival flea market which wasn't very special at all. After that we went back to our place and relaxed before going out for dinner. For dinner we went to a great mexican restaurant. After dinner we went back to our place for a couple hours and then my dad and I drove to the airport to pick up my sister Sam who arrived around midnight, I was happy to see her because we hadn't seen each other for a while.
On the fourth day of out trip my sister faced her fear of the ocean and we went swimming, it was loads of fun. we also swam in the pool and later that day and went in the hot tub. It rained in patches throughout the day but whenever it stopped we were outside doing something. That night we went out to restaurant which was right on the water and the staff fed the tarpin fish right next to us, it was very entertaining to watch because the fish were jumping around and the pelicans were trying to eat the fish. I got a very good picture of the pelicans as well.
Friday rained terribly and my dad and I had to put off our fishing trip until later which made me worry because my dad had to leave Florida Sunday night. In the afternoon it cleared up and we got to swim and do other things such as shuffle board and go on the beach. For dinner we went to a great greek place that was simply amazing.
Saturday morning was sunny and beautiful and my dad and I were out the door by 7:30a.m. to go drift fishing. Though I only caught one fish and my dad didn't catch any we still had a great time and met some interesting people. Right when we docked it started pouring! we were very lucky with the timing, On the way back to our place my dad and I picked up some stone crab and brought it back to our suite. We spent most of the day inside and my mom made the stone crab for dinner it was absolutely delicious!
I spent most of Sunday with my sister because my parents went out shopping, we went to the pool which is where we saw a beautiful bright green iguana eating a strawberry that somebody had given it. I got wonderful pictures of it! And later that day we saw five or six other huge iguanas. I also got pictures of other lizards that day which I think are geckos. That night for dinner we went to an elegant restaurant called Cafe Maxx. I had one of the best steaks I have ever had in my life, I ate every single bite and then had a warm moist chocolate souffle cake with ice cream which was the best thing I have ever had in my life. I wish I had brought the camera so I could post a picture of that ting. It was wonderful. My dad left very light that night.
On Monday my mother and sister went shopping and I read on the beach and learned that Iguanas live in holes on the beach which I found very interesting because I was wondering where they went during the rain. When my mom and sister came back home we went the pool, we weren't allowed to go into the ocean because of the rip tides. That night we went to the cheese cake factory and I had the biggest burger I have ever managed in my life. We then went straight to the dog races which was tons of fun. I lost a few races and then I won two in a row and came out with more money than I had started with, I won a whopping $2.00. I had a great time.
On our last full day we went in the ocean even though we were instructed not too by the warning signs, we had a lot of fun! That night for dinner we had stone crab again which was just as wonderful as the last time.
On Wednesday we packed up, spent our last couple hours on the beach and in the hot tub, and then we left for the airport. our flight was half an hour late, and then we flew back home. Our dog was super excited to see us, it was really funny.
